Great Yarmouth Borough Council implement ten Risk Manager

Hitec Laboratories, the specialist Compliance, Risk & Performance, and Electronic Document Management solutions developer have announced that Great Yarmouth Borough Council have implemented their Ten Risk Manager solution.

Great Yarmouth Council already used Ten Performance Manager to support corporate performance improvement. Ten Risk Manager was introduced because the council wanted an integrated solution, providing a seamless interface between performance and risk.

Previously, the council had assessed risks across areas such as emergency planning and health and safety, but recognised that strategic and operational risk management covering service provision and business continuity had been a lower priority.

“With Ten Risk Manager we view risks at a variety of levels and link them to mitigation actions, contingency plans, departments and so on” commented Peter Dawson, Head of Corporate Services at Great Yarmouth Borough Council. “The Audit Commission expects to see joined up thinking and with this system they get a clear picture of what we call the ‘golden thread - that is the links between visions, objectives, aims, targets and outcomes. The system also allows our auditors to question the decision-making process.”

Peter was tasked with not only developing a risk management strategy that was easy to implement and readily understood, but also to raise awareness amongst senior officers to ensure they incorporated risk management into their service plans. Risk became evident on every agenda and the council was able to develop a standard process that incorporated assessments and mitigation planning.

“The system has helped promote awareness and accountability of risk within the council and is especially useful for our Audit and Risk Committee. Councillors are now less inclined to approve major spending and new projects unless risk assessments are presented first.”
